Empty Swimming Pool
Indie pop/Pop rock "The beautifully written chorus defies the forgetabillity that plagues a lot of indie songs nowadays as it crawls up into your brain where it shall remain forevermore"
The artist
Voodoo Bandits are a rhythmic powerhouse from the Isle of Man. A 4 piece bop-bringing, hook-singing outfit that boast absolute anthems. In case you can't tell, we like us some Voodoo Bandits.
The song
Empty Swimming Pool is a summer banger, no bones about it. The jam starts off with a biting chordal assault that mellows out into a jangle-y, shimmering guitar hook that opens the pearly gates to a brand new warm and inviting new world. All of the above ceases abruptly to expose a flawlessly played bass line that's complimented by a well delivered vocal. Ben Donaldson's vocal has you slowly creeping towards a bridge that reeks of good times on a chilled beach dwelling Saturday. This frames the outrageously addictive chorus perfectly, as well it should. The beautifully written chorus defies the forgetabillity that plagues a lot of indie songs nowadays as it crawls up into your brain where it shall remain forevermore. After the first chorus leaves you there is a feeling of loss, abandonment and pinning to hear it again, thankfully that itch is scratched later on. This single begs you to listen again. A worthy placeholder on any playlist.
The verdict
Empty Swimming Pool is an exceptionally well written song. I have said before that the Indie genre has been watered down and become forgettable over the last decade. Well Voodoo Bandits have well and truly smashed that assumption. They have restored my faith in Indie and proven that there scenes, sounds and places left to explore. This band is going to do very well, see them play now before you have to trek to an arena to see them.
